North Bay Village Aerial

The first of three islands that constitute North Bay Village began development in 1940. North Bay Island was created by a dredge and fill project in the middle of Biscayne Bay, half way between Miami and Miami Beach. By 1941, landscaped streets were in place and 12 homes had been constructed. Previously all that existed was a five acre island known as Broadcast Key (also referred to as Cameo Island).

Broadcast Key was home to radio station WIOD as far back as 1926. Now it is the headquarters of television station WSVN (FOX). North Bay Village was incorporated in 1945.

Through the rest of the 1940's, further dredge and fill operations created Harbor Island and Treasure Island. They were later annexed with North Bay Village. Broadcast Key was annexed in 1963. North Bay Island is a gated community composed of strictly single family homes. Treasure Island, whose street names are taken from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel 'Treasure Island', is a mix of single family homes and multi family structures. Harbor Island is predominantly multi family residences.

Today North Bay Village is a thriving community with many popular restaurants and shops. Presently there are a number of new construction projects under development. They range from smaller, moderatley priced, enclaves to luxurious waterfront high-rises.
