Miami Beach Island Communities
The exclusive Islands off Miami
Beach's western shoreline, in Biscayne Bay, are comprised
of three groups of man made islands. Palm Island, Star Island,
and Hibiscus Island are accessible via the MacArthur Causeway.
The Sunset Islands can be reached from North Bay Road at
20th and 29th streets. Along the Venetian Causeway lie Belle
Isle, Rivo Alto Island, Di Lido Island, San Marino Island,
San Marco Island, and Biscayne Island. These communities
are made up predominantly of single family homes. Only Belle
Isle and Biscayne Island, along the Venetian Causeway, contain
a significant number of multi-family structures, many of
them luxury waterfront high-rise condominiums. While there
are a few more moderate inland homes, the emphasis is on
luxurious bayfront homes with unobstructed

Venetian Causeway
Years Built: 1925-1926
When the Venetian Causeway was first envisioned, the islands
the bridge was to connect did not exist. Beginning in 1922, the
Biscayne Bay improvement Company sold lots for underwater plots
with contracts specifying that the buyer would receive land on
an island that had been dredged, filled, and improved. Construction
of the Venetian Islands proceeded quickly and work on the Venetian
Causeway began in 1925, consisting of viaducts, fill, and drawbridges.
The guardrail design is the most striking feature: square central
units have radiating diagonals that form an “X” pattern
allowing a view of the bay. The Venetian Causeway was listed
in the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
